601 Squadron (County of London, Auxiliary Air Force)

(Re-created)
Recently we were contacted by Robert Richard Elsam whose Uncle is Leonard Northwood Guy. 'Bill' has he was called by most joined the RAFVR in August 1939 as an utrained pilot. He was called up on 1 September, completed his training and after converting to Hurricanes was sent to 601 Squadron at Tangmere in July 1940. In roughly a month with the Squadron Guy showed the stuff he was made of by claiming a JU 87 probably destroyed and another damaged on 11 July, two probable HE 111's and another damaged on 11 August, on the 13 he destroyed a BF 110, shared another and damaged a third, shared a JU 88 on the 15th and on the 16th damaged two JU 87's. Then sadly he crashed into the sea after combat off the Sussex coast. In the near future we hope that Robert, a Briton living in Paraguay can send us more to add to this section on his very brave and heroic Uncle.
